The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) will make a decision regarding former President Jacob Zuma’s incarceration on Thursday, 10 August.
This after the Department received representations from relevant parties on Zuma’s return to prison and his incarceration term.
In July, the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) upheld its decision that releasing Zuma on medical parole, just two months into his prison term was unlawful.
The ConCourt ruled against the Department of Correctional Services’ application to appeal a ruling that Zuma must go back to prison.
Jacob Zuma was sentenced to 15-months in prison for contempt of court in 2021 for refusing to appear before the Zondo Commission.
Zuma served just 2-months of his 15-month jail term at the Escourt correctional facility, and was placed on medical parole in September 2021, just two months into his prison term.
On 14 August, Zuma underwent a surgical procedure due to his “life-threatening illness.”
National Commissioner for the DCS Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale will consider every representation received and make a public decision regarding Zuma’s possible return to prison on Thursday.
Meanwhile, EFF Leader Julius Malema calls for President Cyril Ramaphosa to give Zuma a presidential pardon.
Malema, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has requested that Ramaphosa to pardon his predecessor, should the commissioner of Correctional Services determine that Zuma has to go back to prison.
The president has been encouraged to take this action to prevent turmoil and bloodshed like those that occurred in July 2021.
