‘Sugarman’ – US Folk musician Sixto Rodriguez has died at the age of 81.
Sixto Rodriguez, who was featured in the documentary “Searching for Sugar Man,” passed away at the age of 81.
The documentary highlighted how Rodriguez was widely loved in South Africa.
His CDs saw astronomical sales, and his songs were adopted as anthems against apartheid.
Rodriguez made contact with South African supporters stepping out of retirement in 1998 to embark on his first national tour, drawing tens of thousands of adoring spectators.
The US singer’s passing was reported on the website Sugarman.org on Tuesday, August 8, and his granddaughter Amanda Kennedy verified it on Wednesday, August 9.

According to his wife Konny Rodriguez (72), he passed away in Detroit after only a brief illness.
On Tuesday, the singer’s website sent a note confirming the information:
“It is with great sadness that we at Sugarman.org announce that Sixto Diaz Rodriguez has passed away earlier today. We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his daughters – Sandra, Eva and Regan – and to all his family. Rodriguez was 81 years old. May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace”
