Police in Mpumalanga have condemned the brutal murder of a 5-year old girl in Bushbuckridge on Tuesday, 25 July.
The girl was allegedly killed by her 27-year male cousin, who has since been arrested by police.
This after police and paramedics were called to Bushbuckridge where the body of the girl was found in bushes.
She was found with her throat slit, and stab wounds to her upper body, with paramedics certifying her dead on scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the girl reportedly left home with her cousin, to go to a nearby tuck shop to buy some snacks.
However, the family we alarmed when the cousin returned home alone, informing them that the girl went to play with other kids in the neighbourhood.
The family grew concerned and worried that something happened to the child and began searching for her, eventually making the gruesome discovery of her body in the nearby bushes.
Police Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela condemned the brutal murder of the girl.
“It is disheartening and disappointing to learn that some family members are found to be the ones allegedly perpetrating crimes against children, whereas they have been entrusted to safeguard them.”
The 27-year old is expected to appear at the Bushbuckridge Magistrates Court soon. It has not been established if the girl was raped before she was murdered, and the investigation is still ongoing.
