Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) have confirmed that the Nelson Mandela bridge will be closed to traffic until Thursday, 20 July for cleaning and maintenance.
Only pedestrians will be allowed to cross the bridge from 09h00 to 15h00 until the bridge is reopened to vehicular traffice.
The closure of the bridge comes on Mandela Day, this Tuesday, 18 July, on what would have been the late former President’s 105th birthday.
JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla urged motorists to use alternative routes during this time and said traffic flow will be affected as a result of the bridge’s temporary closure.
“The bridge will be accessible to pedestrians only during this period and it will be closed off to vehicular traffic at the Bertha street, Ntemi Piliso Street and Carr Street intersections.
Motorists are urged to be patient for the duration of the closure and to use the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the Biccard Street bridge as alternative routes.”
Fihla said JMPD officer will be present to assist with traffic in the area.
