Knowing his way around the kitchen, Skhumba says people need to be more creative with their Sunday lunch menus and come up with ideas that are not the same old, “7 colours” with just meat stews and veggies.
If there’s one thing Skhumba knows, it’s food and the Kaya 959 presenter considers himself a Gordon Ramsay on these streets, claiming to be a very skilled cook.
Growing up Thomas and Skhumba both remember really big Sunday lunches, mostly because it was the one day in the week when the entire family gathered to enjoy a meal together.
But, with families of their own now, their preferences for Sunday lunch has changed, and surprisingly it’s Skhumba who is the pickier eater of the two.
Rating listeners menus, Skhumba called most of the options uninspired and said the whole concept of Sunday lunch was to indulge in foods you wouldn’t usually have throughout the week.
“You can eat oxtail stew any day of the week these days. Because it’s cold, stews with meat or chicken is a staple in most homes. Where’s the Norwegian salmon grilled to perfection, served with a bit of buttery asparagus and creamy mash on the side?
Are we not serving chili and garlic prawns?”
The concept of 7 colours was to make up for the week, where there’s little time to ensure the entire family eats healthily, getting a variety of different food groups such as the starches, and salads, meat and veggies.
Skhumba, however feels that the meat and salads or traditional food on Sundays are overdone.
