Johannesburg Water and the City of Joburg are urging residents not to panic amid the 58-hour planned water shutdown affecting most of the city, reassuring people that maintenance efforts are going to plan.
Addressing media on Wednesday, 12 July, City of Joburg Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda and MD for JHB Water, Ntshaveni Mukwevho explained the reason for the lengthy water shutdown at a number of Rand Water’s plants.
Gwamanda told residents that the initiative to perform maintenance during the cold winter months, with loadshedding, may be an inconvenience but it was necessary.
“I understand the planned shutdown comes at a time of inconvenience, particularly because of loadshedding, but the ultimate goal is in the best interest of residents.
Instead of carrying out the maintenance of systems over extended periods of time on a daily, or weekly basis, effecting the water shutdown in this way, means this will be avoided.”
Rand Water is carrying out maintenance at its Vereeniging water treatment plant, Eikenhof booster pumping station and Zuikerbosch water treatment plant.
The 58-hour shutdown is expected to run until 05h00 on Friday, but Rand Water warns that recovery of its systems could take days to restore.
JHB Water says there are water tankers at a number of locations in affected areas, which includes, Randburg, Roodepoort, Johannesburg central, Ennerdale, Southdale and Soweto.
