Members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s protection detail will face an investigation for using unnecessary force, particularly against unharmed civilians, during an assault that took place in Fourways, Johannesburg.
Mashatile is aware of the incident and appeals to the public to allow SAPS the necessary space to complete its investigation into the incident and take whatever corrective action is deemed necessary.
National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola has condemned the actions of members of Mashatile’s VIP protection unit, who allegedly assaulted motorists.
General Masemola said members of SAPS are meant to uphold and protect the fundamental rights of every person and exercise the powers conferred upon them in a responsible and controlled manner.
In video footage that has been circulated on social media, armed members of a blue-light convoy can be seen dragging occupants of a blue VW Polo out of their vehicle and proceeding to assault the 3 men.
Graphic visuals show about 8 members of the VIP protection unit repeatedly kicking the men, with one victim laying motionless while the blows continue.
A woman can be seen getting out of the Polo but gets back in when she sees what is happening.

Masemola says the process to trace victims of the alleged assault is underway.
“After being made aware of the incident captured on a video clip that is currently doing the rounds on various media platforms, the SAPS management has begun the process to trace the victims to obtain statements from them while an internal departmental investigation is underway.
A preliminary report indicates that the vehicles seen in the video belong to SAPS and the men seen in the video are SAPS members.
While the internal departmental investigation into the conduct of the members is underway, the SAPS distances itself from the conduct and behaviour depicted in the video which do not align with the values and code of conduct of the SAPS, which outlines the values and principles that all SAPS members are expected to uphold, including integrity, professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.”
The victims are encouraged to contact Brigadier Athlenda Mathe for investigation purposes.
