The record label business continues to exploit many musicians leaving many musicians rebelling against the industry they profit from as the truth about label exploitation comes to light.
It’s a story that keeps repeating itself.
It’s even harder these days as there isn’t much support for musicians who wish to go it alone, so declining a contract may also mean forgoing a steady income while they work on their album.

Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to musicologist Dr Sheldon Rocha Leal about some of the challenges facing artists focusing on musicians who are exploited by the SA music industry.

Rocha Leal spoke about the importance of understanding the fine print of every contract.
“When you enter into any kind of agreement, you have got to understand what the terms and conditions are, because if you don’t understand what the terms and condition are you are going to end up in a situation where you have all the talent in the world but you can not move forward because you are stuck in a contract that you can’t get out off.”
He also gave an overview of how the South African music industry works and why artist typically get exploited.
