Phemelo Motene speaks to Historian and Author Steve Lebelo about the days that led up to June 16th, 1976, and the events that followed.
According to Lebelo, not everything that happened around that time is shared because the narrative that was constructed aimed to share a broader insight beyond what happened in Soweto.
The motivation to invite Lebelo to talk about the history of June 16th happened when a listener left POV a voice note that challenges the constructed narrative.
The listener argues that Hector Peterson was not the first person who was shot in 1976. He is of the view that Hastings Ndlovu was shot first. Hector’s death is just remembered because of the picture that was taken and shared in newspapers throughout the world.
Phemelo also talks to Irfaan Mangera who is a Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth Activism Programme Manager. Mangera talks about the support the youth need in 2023 as well as how they believe the political landscape should change
