The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirms the axing of its CEO, Tshepo Mahanuke following a rigorous investigation over fraudulent qualifications on his CV.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, 14 June, the JRA said Mahanuke’s contract termination comes after he failed to provide counter-evidence to the allegations levelled against him.
Mahanuke was granted 7-days to appeal the decision, but has to date, not responded with counter-evidence, but has until Friday, 16 June to do so.
The decision was explained by JRA Board Chairperson, Charles Cilliers who said, “Given the serious nature and far-reaching ramifications of the matter at hand, coupled with the findings of a rigorous investigation and the failure of Mt Mahanuke to respond to the charges levelled against him, the JRA Board resolved to immediately terminate Mr Mahanuke’s employment with the JRA.
The decision to terminate Mr. Mahanuke’s employment at the JRA complies with the Labour Relations Act, Schedule 8- Code of Good Practice on Dismissal, the relevant Case Law, and also considers the severe legal costs already incurred thus far.”
Tshepo Mahanuke claimed he had an honorary doctorate, and allegedly insisted that staff call him “Doctor.”
Prior to his axing from the JRA, Mahanuke was suspended and was reportedly still paid his more than R3 million salary.
The JRA maintains that it is a city-owned agency responsible for the maintenance, repair and development of Johannesburg’s road network and storm water infrastructure, including bridges, and culverts, traffic lights and signage.
