A video from Thursday evening has been making rounds on social media where cars belonging to Uber and Bolt drivers were set alight at Maponya Mall, Soweto.
This comes after a confrontation between taxi drivers and e-hailing drivers where it is alleged that the taxi drivers attacked the e-hailing operators, burning 3 vehicles and damaging four others at the Maponya Mall parking lot.
Two of the burnt vehicle are said to have belonged to e-hailing drivers and one to a private person. Three people were rushed to hospital after the attacks, with one having sustained serious injuries.
Addressing the media, Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics Diale Tlabela condemned these attacks.
“We would like to strongly condemn these senseless attacks on individuals and damage to vehicles. These acts are unacceptable and should be dealt with harshly. We will not be deterred from building an integrated and modernized public transport system by individuals who use intimidation and violence to put their message across,” said the MEC.
“We wish those injured a speedy recovery and call on law enforcement officials to work around the clock to apprehend those who were involved in these barbaric attacks. They should face the full might of the law.”
Kaya 959 Reporter Katleho Sekhotho who is at the scene says e-hailing drivers said there are “tensions between them, taxi drivers and other people operating publicly.” One driver revealed that his windows were smashed and he was taken by two gunmen.
