The Limpopo Department of Health has confirmed the province’s first case of cholera.
Health MEC Dr. Phophi Ramathuba says a 26-year old Zimbabwean national was admitted to the Musina Hospital on Friday, 26 May.
Ramathuba says that the case is not out of the ordinary as there has been an outbreak in the neighbouring Beitbridge district of Zimbabwe.
According to the MEC, the patient was isolated and treated, and is recovering well.
“What we can confirm is that there is a case of one resident from Giyani municipality, who is a public servant. The patient works in Musina municipality and travelled to Hammanskraal, where he spent two weeks. He fell ill and was admitted, and the confirmation results came to show that he tested positive.
As a precautionary measure when the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) informs us that there might be a case, we did not leave it to chance.
Hence over the weekend a tracer team was deployed, and conducted contact tracing at his home and work place, and so far there is no evidence that anyone else has contracted cholera.”

This after a cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal claimed the lives of 23 people. In the past few days, 23 other patients were transferred to hospitals around Tshwane.
According to the Department, from Saturday, 27 May, 77 patients were admitted for diarrheal disease.
Although 29 patients have since recovered and have been discharged, the number of cholera cases at Jubilee is still at 48.
