Just like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day is equally important to 959 Breakfast’s Dineo Ranaka who says the day is not necessarily about her but about “giving praise” to her mom.
“She sacrificed most of her dreams, her aspirations to have myself and my siblings. She chose a man in her life that she was going to raise us with and they both made significant sacrifices for us. Mother’s Day is in honour of not myself, but of the next mother and other mothers around me that inspire and teach me how to be a better mom and that’s the significance of it for me.”
Dineo uses the month of May as a time to reflect on her relationship with her kids.
“I used the month of May and the concept of Mother’s Day to reflect on my mothering; My relationship with myself as a mom. Am I fair to myself, am I fair to my children? Am I growing, or am I maturing? It is a lot of reflection, so I don’t go overboard in celebrating it for myself.”
The mother of three encourages women to “have honest conversations with yourself about how you can become a better mother and heal from the traumas that are preventing you from becoming a better mother,” she adds. “Childhood traumas, mommy and daddy issues from the past. Are you truly being the best version of a mother that you can be for your children?”
Dineo’s Mother’s Day message to fellow moms
Dineo reminds fellow moms not to be “too hard” on themselves as no one is an expert at being a mother.
“Children don’t come with a user manual and the way your parents raised you is not the only user manual. It’s a guide, so calm down and enjoy the journey, forgive yourself as often as you can for the mistakes you’ll make along the way, and trust that your children will fare well in the universe. Also, don’t hoard them, remember they are not yours, they belong to the world. So don’t have too many expectations for them to be in your world.”
