DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe has been granted R4000 bail following his arrest on Sunday afternoon for assaulting his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo.
During Maphorisa’s bail hearing on Monday at the Randburg magistrate court, it was revealed that Thuli Phongolo withdrew her initial statement detailing how the producer physically assaulted her. Despite this, his bail conditions remain effective until the charges against him are formally withdrawn.
According to Thuli Phongolo’s initial statement, Sekowe assaulted her in her home in Johannesburg.
“On Sunday 2023/5/7 at about 12 pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig,” she detailed.
The former Generations: The Legacy actor told police that Maphorisa “became aggressive” and started to punch her with his fists on her chest.” “He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” said Phongolo.
In addition to this, she revealed that he “kept hitting her with his elbow on the balcony while they were fighting for her phone, which he had taken from her.”
