Police Minister Bheki Cele believes the Pietermaritzburg mass shooting, in which 10 people were killed, was part of a cleansing orchestrated by a Swaziland witchdoctor.
Cele who visited the gruesome murder scene in Imbali, Unit 14 Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 21 April, said police have arrested two suspects linked to the murders, while one suspect was shot and killed in an exchange of bullets with police.
Another suspect is said to have escaped but police have information that gives them confidence he will be arrested too.
Eight women and 2 men were mercilessly gunned down in their township home at approximately 04h00.
Cele said that police were made aware that the murders were part of a cleansing linked to a witchdoctor who goes by the name of Nyanga, who is believed to be from Swaziland.
Speaking to media, Cele said, “We’ve spoken to one of the suspects, and they gave us the story that they were indeed some cleansing. They gave us the name of Nyanga, the witchdoctor who they say comes from Swaziland.
But the suspect who was shot and killed by police, it looks like he is the guy. His name is Sauras, I don’t know the real name. He’s linked to many crime scenes, especially murder around here, he’s known to be really notorious here in Pietermaritzburg and Inanda in Durban.”
