The Zulu royal family has requested patience and respect while it observes its mourning period.
The period is expected to last for three months, according to the Zulu culture.
The family says a successor for King Goodwill Zwelithini will only be made public when this period is over.
King Zwelithini passed away earlier this month due to diabetes-related complications.
AmaZulu traditional prime minister Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi gave an update to the media on Wednesday. He said Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu will act as Regent of the Zulu Nation in the interim.
“Three months is for mourning, it is for family mourning according to our tradition and she cannot do anything while in mourning. She will be assisted by the royal council in the meantime,” said Prince Buthelezi.

“In line with the wishes of his majesty the King, the family would like to announce that her majesty Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu will act as regent of the Zulu nation during the interregnum,” he added.
Prince Buthelezi asked the Zulu nation, which is also in mourning, to resume their normal duties from Friday.
“As a champion of food security and substance farming, his majesty urged that things not come to a standstill for a long mourning period. People are free to plough and plant and work from Friday in accordance to his majesty’s wishes,” he said.
