On 5 March 2020, South Africa recorded its first case of the coronavirus.
Since then, more than 50,000 people have died due to COVID-19 related deaths in South Africa.
As the country continues to fight against the pandemic, the Health Department has recorded 510 new COVID-19 cases in the last day. This brings the total number of cases in the country since the start of the pandemic to over 1.5-million.
55 more people succumbed to COVID-19 related illnesses, which puts the national death toll at over 52,000.

Third wave
Over the past couple of weeks, experts have been warning South Africans about a possible third wave of infections.
The third wave is expected to hit the country by June.
“The risk of third and fourth waves can never be excluded because this was the trend globally and no-one can say that until the majority of people are vaccinated that we are safe from any resurgence,” Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told MPs during a question-and-answer session in the National Assembly.
Health Centre Bhekisisa’s DR Helene Kortze says it is concerning that people have become complacent in following health protocols.
