A 16-year-old female learner was sentenced to three months in prison for missing a court appearance.
The Kwa-Zulu-Natal pupil is accused of assaulting a fellow learner.
Video footage of the assault circulated on social media in September 2020. The pupils were from Mathole High School in Mahlabathini.
The teen girl was released on warning and under the care of the mother because of her age.
However, she was supposed to be back in court on February 23, 2021, but failed to appear.
This led to her being found guilty for failing to appear in court and being sentenced to three months in prison.
KwaZulu-Natal Education Department hopes the sentence handed down to the learner will serve as a lesson to others.
The department’s Muzi Mahlambi says bullying needs to be dealt with at schools.
