Teachings of the Bahá’í faith
He has defined himself as a first-generation South African-born Persian, a member of the Bahá’í faith, which he describes as a world religion that focuses on unity, equality and no prejudice. He spoke briefly about his upbringing and how it has shaped his outlook on life.
“I’ve always been brought with and understanding that as a human being, as with every human being, we have multiple talent, potential and capacity, that we can develop while we are here in this life. The best way to achieve that potential and reach that capacity is through helping others. Through service to humanity.”
Getting the right foundation
Dr Smile also spoke about his philanthropic work and how much easier it is to do great things if it’s for the right reasons.
“It’s not about a balance, we have this concept in our head about balance, 50% on the left, 50% on the right. Whereas I feel if your whole foundation for everything you do is some type of spiritual foundation, everything automatically falls into place.”
The invention of Afro-Persian
This Saturday will be the Bahá’í faith New Year, as well as the Persian New Year, and Dr Smile, will be performing live and debuting new music on the BBC International Persian New Year show.
“I have obviously been born here am a huge lover of everything South African… what I’ve done is come up with a new genre called Afro-Persian.”
