Taxi associations have welcomed the Gauteng Transport Department’s decision to launch a “Smart Roads Fridays” campaign.
The campaign aims to eradicate potholes and ensure the maintenance of roads.
MEC Jacob Mamabolo made the announcement during a briefing on road infrastructure projects planned for the province.
The National taxi alliance’s Theo Malele says potholes have been costly to motorists.
Government pays millions to motorists
According to research, 60% of South Africa roads are in poor condition.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula revealed in 2020 that government has spent millions paying out pothole claims to motorists.
More than 200 claims were lodged against the department during the 2019/20 financial year.
Fourteen of the claims were valued at over R100,000 per case.
The total claims amounted to R5,219,365.03.
