Mtwan’oMntu is a dance performance presented by The Centre For Less Good Idea, which was founded by critically acclaimed South African artist William Kentridge. The centre is a space that supports experimental, collaborative and cross-disciplinary arts projects.
Kgomotso Meso spoke to renowned choreographer and dancer Thulisile Binda, who will be performing on stage, on why this piece of performance art was so important during these times.
The importance of connection in the global pandemic
Mtwan’oMntu is an exploration of a deep yearning for connectedness. The 60- minute dance performance mines life’s complex, highly dynamic and non-linear expressions in seeking belonging and building relationships, be it self, love or spiritual connections.
Mtwan’oMntu is a journey that evokes the awareness of a mongoose and is premised on the idea that theenergy flows to where your attention goes.
Performing this piece is Xolisile Bongwana and Thulisile Binda, who are collaborating as both choreographers and dancers. Binda explains the concept of connection and why it’s needed in the world.
“Using rhythmic and cyclical movement we attempt to connect to the ‘other’ – in it we often encounter the clash – a fight for space, attention, time and recognition, within these processes we are able to discover structure, development and growth and with them the ability to re-create new forms and ideas, again and again”
