
Nduduzo Makhathini obtains his PhD in Music from Stellenbosch University.
Award-winning jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini graduated with a PhD in Music from Stellebosch University on Monday.
As a jazz musician who comes from a musical family in Umgungundlovu in Pietermaritzburg, Makhathini has shared the stage with McCoy Mrubata, Simphiwe Dana, Zim Ngqawana, and Feya Faku.
Mkhathini is an educator and researcher, and the Head of the Music Department at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape.
Dr. Makhathini undertook a study for his dissertation titled: “Breaking into sound: Dislocating a True Cosmology and Improvisation in South African Jazz.”
His most recent masterpiece and 10th album, In the Spirit of Ntu, came out in 2022.

A day after receiving his PhD cap, Dr Makhathini went to social media to express his sincere appreciation to everyone who had helped him along the way.
He wrote: “Yesterday I graduated with a PhD in Music from Stellenbosch University, I’m thankful to everyone that has been supportive in this journey since my registration in 2019. More later ♥️🕯️ Thokoza 🕯️♥️”
