In April 2022 South Africans had high hopes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country was no longer in the National State of Disaster after 750 days.
This was initially imposed to manage the Covid-19 pandemic
There was a lot of excitement about getting back to normal life and the opportunities that lay ahead. Sadly, we did know that there was another pandemic looming – Loadshedding.
Loadshedding was mostly suspended during the lockdown as there was less demand for electricity. In early 2021 stage-2 loadshedding was implemented and by June 2021 we were experiencing stage 4 loadshedding.
Since then the power outages have gotten worse, resulting in many businesses shutting down.
During his SONA 23 address in February, Ramaphosa declared loadshedding a National State of Disaster.
This sparked the recent conversation on 959 Breakfast with Dineo and Sol about what is worse between the national lockdown and loadshedding.
Sol says loadshedding was better because people could still work.
“Definitely loadshedding, during the lockdown you could sit at home and Netflix at home, especially for those who could work from home. All I needed was a computer. However, during loadshedding one can’t do those things.”
Dineo also preferred the lockdown compared to loadshedding.
“I prefer lockdown because loadshedding is economically crippling for an entrepreneur. I remember we were doing work on Saturday and we lost four hours of work.”
