With President Cyril Ramaphosa expected to make changes to his cabinet, South Africans are wondering if those who remained loyal to him will be rewarded.
Are South African politicians failing upwards? That is the question Sizwe Dhlomo posed on Kaya Drive this Monday, 30 January. Many agree that the country’s political “fat cats” receive their public funded pay cheques regardless of non-performance.
Sihle Zikalala, former KwaZulu-Natal premier’s redeployment to parliament sparked the conversation.
Once pitted as “Cyril’s man”, Sizwe predicts that Zikalala will receive a portfolio, although the ANC in KZN did not specify what the plan for the former premier is.
The prediction is that Zikalala is most likely going to be an instrumental part of the President’s new executive, once Ramaphosa makes these adjustments.
“You know at home if you didn’t tie your shoelaces, you get reprimanded. But it seems in government, you get rewarded if you don’t tie your laces, in fact you don’t even have to wear shoes but you get rewarded.”
One Kaya Drive listener shared his opinion
From the outside looking in, it seems that those within the party who remained loyal to Ramaphosa are now reaping the rewards.
Current Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan tops the list over the current Eskom power crisis.
With a number of political parties gunning for Gordhan to resign, why hasn’t he? Instead, the Public Enterprises Minister enjoys the perks of his position without repercussions for his inability to address the power crisis.
