Pope Benedict XVI is being laid to rest at the Vatican.
Benedict’s unexpected departure in 2013, resulted in Pope Francis being elected to lead the Catholic Church and is today presiding over the burial Mass.
The historic funeral marked the conclusion of a period in Catholic Church history that was notable for Benedict’s decision to resign as pope, the first pope to do so in modern times.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away last week at the age of 95.
