Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many people do not eat healthy foods.
Cereals and fruit juices loaded with sugar are popular breakfast choices but offer very little nutritional value.
Busy lifestyles and increasing family and work demands also lead to many people skipping the most important meal of the day.
If you are going to prepare your body for a day of work and activity, breakfast is your starting block. For this reason, it is imperative that you eat a healthy, balanced meal.
What is a balanced breakfast?
A balanced breakfast will contain three of the four core food groups: proteins, grains, dairy and fruit and vegetables.
Proteins
Proteins include things like eggs, chicken breast, peanut butter, tofu and chia seeds. Lean proteins supply the amino acid building blocks for cellular repair and production. They also keep you feeling fuller for longer and will help with controlling your food intake for the rest of the day.
Grains
Grains include items like whole-grain cereals, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, muesli and quinoa. Whole grains give you the carbohydrates you need to keep going during the day. It’s also a source of fibre that helps your digestive system.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruits and vegetables that are great for breakfast include avocado, berries, bananas, cucumber and spinach. They’re a great source of fibre, vitamins and minerals which your body needs to keep functioning and to protect itself from diseases, especially children.
Dairy
Dairy options for breakfast include items like milk, yoghurt and cottage cheese. Dairy is a great provider of calcium and Vitamin D for healthier and stronger bones.
Energy boost
For a breakfast energy boost, serve your family a mug or glass of Milo along with their balanced breakfast. Milo is a great source of calcium for strong teeth and bones, iron to carry oxygen to the body’s cells, vitamin A for healthy eyesight, vitamins B1 and B2 to help release energy and vitamin C to keep skin and gums in good shape.
