Iranian footballer sentenced to death by the Islamic Republic for “campaigning for women’s rights”
Former Iranian youth football player Amir Nasr-Azadani has been given a death sentence by the government for advocating for women’s rights during the country’s ongoing demonstrations.
Nasr-Azadani has been arrested for committing ‘moharabeh,’ which is a Persian term that roughly translates to ‘waging war against God.’
The 26-year-old former football player for Iran’s national youth squad has played for teams including Rah-Ahan Tehran FC, Tractor SC, and Gol-e Rayhan in Iran’s major division in addition to the national youth squad.

In a statement made public, the international football players’ organization FIFPRO said it is “shocked and sickened by reports that professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani faces execution in Iran after campaigning for women’s rights and basic freedom in his country.”
