The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that a Grade 6 learner drowned on a Tshwane school trip on Friday, 02 December.
Department MEC, Matome Chiloane will be visiting Refalotse Primary School in Winterveld to address the school following the tragic incident.
According to reports, learners were on a school trip to a resort, accompanied by teachers and parents.
“After lunch, learners changes into their swimwear to play in the pools under the supervision of educators and parents. Teachers and parents were alerted by other pupils that the boy was ‘unresponsive’ in the pool.”
The Grade 6 learner was taken out of the pool and parents tried to resuscitate him while waiting for emergency services and police. Paramedics certified the learner dead on scene.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the learner’s death.
This is the second drowning incident involving minors over the past week. On 30 November, two girls aged 5 and 9 drowned at a hotel swimming pool in Durban.
