The Sizwe Kupelo Foundation started a petition to ban the domestic ownership of pit bulls in South Africa.
The foundation created the petition after many reports of attacks on people that included children were reported.
The most recent report is of an 8-year-old boy in Bloemfontein.
The boy was playing in his backyard when the neighbour’s dog escaped from its enclosure and attacked the boy.
This happened at about 2 pm on Saturday. The boy was declared dead on the scene by paramedics. Severe bites to the chest and neck area are the cause of death.
The dog was since put down.
The petition by The Kupelo Foundation has since received 50 000 votes in support of the decision.
Regardless of the senseless attacks and deaths that involved pit bulls, owners and breed lovers believe that it is not the dog, but the owner who is at fault for the attacks.
The Foundation opposes the view and wants government to take decisive steps toward the “complete ban on the ownership of pit bulls as domestic animals” in South Africa.
