The weekend rains have caused Johannesburg Emergency Services to remain on high alert.
The Spokesperson of the Johannesburg Emergency Services, Robert Mulaudzi urged residents who live in low-lying areas in the city to exercise caution, avoid river streams and to keep children away from it.
The announcement followed the displacement of more than 300 Nancefield hostel residents in Soweto. The residents were affected by flash floods and are currently being assist by the city with temporary shelter.
Mulaudzi says that no major incidents were reported but urges motorist to drive cautiously.
The City of Johannesburg offered the following Flash flooding safety tips:
- Evacuate low-lying areas for higher ground
- Keep away from power lines and avoid using electrical equipment
- Children must not play in stormwater drains or ditches
- Avoid driving through flooded roads or bridges
- Evacuate your car if you’re stuck in rising water
- Heed road closure warnings
- Do not panic
The City of Tshwane has also cautioned motorists to avoid the N14 because of a sinkhole.
