A Seventh-Day Adventist Church treasurer who stole R800K in tithes has been sentenced to three years in prison.
A Zimbabwean lady was given a three-year prison sentence for stealing church money between 2012 and 2015.
Lady Memory Mutsika, 43, had been charged with 128 charges of theft, according to Lumka Mahanjana, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

She claimed Mutsika served as the church treasurer for the Seventh-Day Adventist congregation in Pretoria City.

Her duties included sending donations made to the church account for tithes and offerings to the Northern Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
“Mutsika transferred more than R800 000 of the money received from the tithe and offerings to her bank account and for her personal use,” she said.
IOL reports that the magistrate claimed that although the church had put Mutsika in a position of trust, she had betrayed it.
“He further said that he viewed Mutsika’s willingness to pay back the money, as a bargaining tool and as a ticket to keep her out of prison. Therefore, a sentence of imprisonment was appropriate and criminal conduct has consequences,” the NPA said.
