Provincial health departments are ready to roll out the first phase of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine to frontline healthcare workers.
The vaccines arrived last night and will be distributed to 17 vaccine sites across the country.

In Gauteng, the sites include Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital as well as Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
Health workers who have not registered for the vaccine are encouraged to do so by the South African Medical Association.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine roll out begins Natasha
Approximately 80 000 doses will be administered over the next few weeks, and government has confirmed another 9 million doses have been secured.
Speaking in the National Assembly yesterday, Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize said the president would update South Africans on the start of the vaccination drive.
The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has shown a 57% efficacy rate in preventing severe effects of COVID-19.
In the last 24-hour cycle, 219 more South Africans have lost their lives due to COVID-19 related complications.
This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 48 313.
According to the latest figures 1 210 new cases were also confirmed, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1 494 119.
Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize urged all citizens to use the COVID-19 alert app in order to assist with tracking and tracing efforts.
