Devastated Brakpan residents and shop owners are picking up the pieces after their flats were gutted in a blaze in Kritzinger Avenue this morning.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services say they are still searching buildings in the vicinity to make sure no-one was trapped inside when the fire broke out.
There are no reported casualties so far.
The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning and quickly spread. At least seven shops and eight other flats were damaged.
Emergency services spokesperson William Ntladi says it was sad to watch the residents’ belongings get destroyed in the blaze.
Kaya 959’s Juliet Joseph spoke to residents at the scene.
They watched in horror as their homes went up in flames. One business owner said he lost in excess of R1-million in the fire.
“You want to know the truth, I don’t even want to talk. My entire livelihood, 31 years of work, building a business all gone is ashes. We’re unfortunately not insured, so I am basically sitting here as a broken man… Sad, unfortunate and I am hoping God has a better plan for me, because as we speak now I have nothing to fall back on.”
It is still unclear what caused the blaze.
