Falling behind to stiff competition from Burger King, McDonalds is testing out a veggie-friendly patty with its international market.
The McPlant burger is the latest offering on the global McDonald’s menu. The patties are made by meat substitute company, Beyond Meat. Consisting mostly of peas, rice proteins and veg the meat-free option is not entirely vegan or vegetarian. The patties will still be cooked on the same grill as the regular beef and chicken burgers.

Testing started in Denmark and Canada as a trial, with no guarantee that the McPlant will be sticking around or rolled out to the franchise’s global stores.
The veggie-friendly option will join other ‘fake meat’ inclusions such as the Beyond Burgers offerings and Pizza Hut’s ‘Incogmeato.’ Beyond Burgers are available in South Africa but they seem unreasonably priced at roughly R130.
The McPlant would be a cheaper option and is said to pack a flavour explosion and texture that’s pretty similar to beef.
Should the McPlant come to South Africa?
