The last few months have been tough for Temba Bavuma and those struggles appear to have hampered his form for the Proteas.
The short-format captain has had to recover from injury and a bruised ego, the latter a result of going unsold at the inaugural SA20 auction in September.
The captain of the national team failed to attract a bid which he described as both disappointing and surprising.
To say his confidence has been dealt a blow would be an understatement.
Since the auction, Bavuma’s next six innings for the Proteas have produced some sorry readings (0, 0, 3, 2*, 2, and 10) which does not bode well for South Africa’s bid to win a maiden cricket world cup.
If the Proteas are to enjoy any form of success at the T20 World Cup in Australia, Bavuma must lead from the front, especially with the bat.
South Africa has a woeful record at cricket world cups, and it doesn’t inspire confidence that they have failed to advance beyond the second round at the last two tournaments.
While Bavuma is clearly under pressure, his captaincy and role in the side will come into serious question should South Africa fall short once again.
The ICC T20 World Cup concludes on Sunday, November 13.
