Connie Chiume is a South African actress with Malawi descent who is currently best known for her starring role as Mam’Sonto, the township gangster disguised as a shebeen queen in the popular telenovela Gomora. She is also best known for starring in the films Black Panther, Black is King and Blessers.

She recently joined Sumitra Nydoo on My Money and Me to share her money lesson and how her relationship with money has evolved over the years.

Chiume says that she was never taught about money growing up and when she started making money her first priority was looking good.
“…unfortunately some of us were never taught how to handle money when we were growing up. All we kept saying was, the day I start working I want this and that, you never thought about saving…”

In her career, she had the opportunity to travel extensively, Chiume recounts spending all her money on clothes while abroad and having nothing left when returning home. Her industry’s has also taught her a lot about how to manage money, being a freelancer who receives a fluctuating income she says has taught her lessons on how to be friends with money.
“…As you grow you start to have a good relationship with money, you start to have priorities as to what is important for you in life…”
In the interview, she shares how she realised the importance of money when she came back from her travels with bags full of new clothes to an empty house. Her parents had moved back to Malawi, with nowhere to stay, this is when it clicked how important it was to save money for a rainy day.
