Amid the unbearable heatwave and frustration of continuous loadshedding, residents in parts of Joburg and Tshwane have to deal with Stage 2 water restrictions too.
This as Rand Water noted the overall reservoir storage capacity dropped to just 38% in the past two weeks.
Due to increased water demand, the capacity at Rand Water fell from 52% meaning water restrictions will be implemented until reserves restore to 60% capacity levels.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 04 October, Johannesburg Water said the restrictions will be its Eikenhof, Zwartkopjes, and Palmiet pump stations.
This means a majority of areas in the south of Johannesburg will be affected by the Stage 2 restrictions.
Several areas in the city went without water on Tuesday with no prior notification to residents, while some areas had limited supply.
Suburbs such as Emmarentia, Parktown, Rosebank, Northcliff and Hyde Park received a slow stream of water for the past few days.
Irate residents have lobbied their ward councillors for answers but many were just as clueless about the water interruptions.
Residents are urged to abide by the Stage 2 restrictions which states:
- Consumers are not to water or irrigate their gardens from 06h00 to 18h00 daily,
- Don’t fill swimming pools with municipal water, and
- Not to use hosepipes to wash cars, paving etc.
People are also advised to:
- Use water sparingly, not leave taps dripping,
- Take shallow baths or quick showers,
- Use bathwater or grey water to water the garden
