Joining 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka this morning is gifted South African Hip Hop artist Blxckie.
Blxckie dropped out of University to pursue a career in music.
“I never finished my social sciences degree and I feel bad about it because I didn’t do it the official way. I know there is a way where you can go to the offices and let them know that you are about to take a little break. I just left,” he tells the show.
He came to Johannesburg with 6 guys in his group, all hoping to make it big.
“When I tried to make it I was with 6 other guys. They are all out here now.
“I feel like some people found their space. But when we first got here we all wanted to make it work.”
Sharing his thoughts on rappers having ghostwriters, Blxckie doesn’t necessarily feel like it’s a bad thing.
“The way people do it now is different. I write a song and record it and someone just replicates it with their vocals. I don’t mind it – it’s dope for business.”
Somnyama is featured in Sete, the biggest Hip Hop song at the moment. He shares how the record came about:
“K.O came to the studio in Midrand when he was giving out the merch for Skhanda World. I think he was just going to different people in person.
“He got there and said we should work. Two weeks late he pulled up with the song on a USB and it had everything.”
In the future, the rapper would love to work with Tshego and hopes to put out more music with Nasty C.
