The Springbok camp has been rocked by the reported affair between flyhalf Elton Jantjies and team dietician, Zeenat Simjee.
Jantjies and Simjee were both sent home from Argentina, where the Boks are preparing for the test against the Argentinian side.
Following news of their alleged affair, the Boks released a statement on Sunday, 11 September on the decision to have both Jantjies and Simjee return home.
“The Springbok management are aware of reports regarding Springbok flyhalf, Elton Jantjies and team dietician, Zeenat Simjee between the training camp in Sabie and the Test match against New Zealand in Mbombela earlier this year.
No team protocols were breached, but the individuals are returning to South Africa to attend to these personal reports and to eliminate any distractions to the team’s preparations for the Test against Argentina.
No further comment will be made at this time.”
Springbok management on Elton Jantjies and Zeenat Simjee’s reported affair
News of Jantjies and Simjee’s reported affair broke after a guesthouse in Mbombela lodged a complaint with the SA Rugby Union (SARU), over an unpaid R26 000 bill.
Elton Jantjies, who is married with three young children, reportedly booked the guesthouse for Simjee and himself, during the Boks’ visit to Mbombela last month.
Both Jantjies and Simjee left without settling the bill, which was later paid after the Rapport newspaper enquired about the incident.
This is the flyhalf’s second headline grabbing incident for the year, as he was accused of sexually harassing an air hostess on a flight from Dubai to Johannesburg in May.
Jantjies was released on R1,000 bail and charges against him were dropped after an agreement was reached for the Bok player to pay for damages to the aeroplane.
Neither Jantjies nor Simjee have issued statements regarding their reported affair.
