Award-winning singer/songwriter Zakes Bantwini Joined 959 Breakfast with Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka on Wednesday morning.
At the 28th edition of the South African Music Awards, Zakes Bantwini won two SAMAs including Highest Radio Airplay Composers Award and Best Collaboration.
In his acceptance speech, an emotional Zakes said it was “his first SAMA award in 16 years.”
Speaking to 959 Breakfast, Zakes revealed that at a point he gave up on the SAMAs.
“You can lose an award to someone that actually deserves it, but when you lose an award to a song that you’ve never heard most people will ask themselves who is that particular person
“There is a time when you feel like – this is a bit shocking and there is a time when you understand that anyone can win this.”
He adds that we should work together to bring back the integrity of the SAMAs.
Opening up about his relationship with his wife Nandi, Zakes shared that she is “very supportive.”
He pleads with fathers to be more present in their children’s lives.
“Shaka is the first person I would wake up with every day and seeing him develop is a different dynamic altogether. I feel like all my children love me and know I’m there but I wish I woke up next to them every day.
“I would encourage everyone, especially males – usually, when we have children outside of wedlock they end up being raised by their mothers.
“We sometimes think we are raising them by just providing money but we are not. But are you really that present?”
