President Cyril Ramaphosa’s security officers caused a stir at a national Women’s Day ceremony when they prevented an attempt to have him arrested in connection with the Farmgate incident.
The president and his entourage were greeted warmly as they arrived at Slahla Sports Field in the Midlands, but members of the civil rights group Real Democracy who had come to perform a citizen’s arrest were stopped from doing so by his security detail.
After being halted at the VVIP entrance and interrogated by security personnel, the group was unable to access the event and was instead attended to by workers from the Presidency.
According to Daily News, “charge sheet” with seven counts against Ramaphosa was accepted by Roshni Singh, a representative of the Presidency.

The charge sheet stated that count one related to the scandal known as Phala Phala Farmgate, in which the president is believed to have hidden a sizable sum of foreign currency under a couch and a mattress.
Other accusations included the 2012 Marikana massacre, which the organization claimed he should be held accountable for after reportedly ordering the police to intervene in defence of striking miners.
Charges of tax evasion and the sale of state-owned businesses without enough public participation were also brought forth.
