The public protector’s office (PPSA) has announced that it will use its subpoena power in a probe into allegations that President Cyril Ramaphosa had broken the Executive Ethics Code.
Ramaphosa will be summoned by acting public protector Kholeka Gcaleka to appear in court and respond to inquiries into the theft of foreign currency from his Phala Phala estate.
The news, according to PPSA spokesman Oupa Segalwe, came after numerous media inquiries concerning the situation.

PPSA invoked its subpoena powers according to the Public Protector Act.
“We confirm that the president had until July 18 to respond to the allegations letter of June 7 after his previous request to have the initial return date of June 22 2022 extended. A request for a further extension has instead been filed.”

Ramaphosa has not yet responded to the 31 questions that have been addressed to him inquiring about the theft and potential cover-up.
Ramaphosa allegedly did not answer by the extended deadline of July 18, according to Gcaleka.
Instead, he made a second request for an extension, which was turned down the same day.
On June 7, Ramaphosa placed Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the public protector, on suspension until the outcome of a parliamentary inquiry for misconduct.
