The report’s key conclusions show that South Africa’s box office earnings for 2021 totalled more than R325 million. Ten of the 155 movies that were released in the nation brought in the most of this money, and none of the top 10 movies was homegrown.
“The 10-year trend basically shows that the annual revenue was basically increasing before the COVID 19 pandemic, despite the fact that there was a decrease of films made.
“2018 in the past 10 years was definitely the best performing year, the year generated over R 1,3 billion, while 2020 was understandably the worst performing year, and generated only 220 million.” says Dumeko
Dumeko also indicated that the ten-year trend research revealed that, while box office revenue for all South African films fluctuated annually, it generally decreased from R84 million in 2012 to R60 million in 2019.
