Corrie Pretorius, the 50-year old man who violently assaulted a 16-year old in Groblersdal has been denied bail.
The incident sparked mass outrage on social media, with Pretorius kicking and stomping on the chest of Kopano Makweng while pointing a firearm at the teen.
On Wednesday, 29 June, the Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court denied Corrie Pretorius bail with the case being postponed to 6 September.
His attorney, JJ Venter claimed his client’s life was in danger whilst in custody, with several threats made on his life.
Pretorius’ legal team further said the court was being held hostage by the community who he claimed threatened to burn the town to the ground if his client is granted bail.
Speaking to the court, Venter said Pretorius was allegedly abused whilst in custody and had been traumatised by his time in prison.
The Groblersdal Magistrate’s Court has allowed Pretorius’ defence team to reopen the bail application.
