All main routes in and out of Soweto have been blocked by protesters with burning tyres and rocks.
The exact reason behind the protests are unknown but it is believed to be a culmination of service delivery issues which includes electricity disputes.
Protesters cut off main entry and exits routes, especially those that include the Rea Vaya bus lanes.
Some of the affected routes include Pimville, Jabulani, Diepkloof and Moletsane.
Residents say Monday’s protests are a build-up to an even bigger shutdown that’s planned.
Protests are expected to continue on Tuesday, 21 June as residents say they will not stop until Jo’burg Mayor Mpho Phalatse addresses their grievances.
It is unclear if some informal settlements were removed over the weekend but residents say they’ve had enough and are calling for change.
For now, all Rea Vaya routes in and out of Soweto are blocked and according to reports, Pimville is a no-go area.
There is currently no police presence and motorists are urged to avoid travelling to Soweto until calm has been restored.
