Joining My Top 10 at 10 with Tbose is singer/songwriter Nomfundo Ncgobo better known by her stage name Nomfundo Moh.
The UKZN graduate is popularly known for her hit singles Soft Life and Phakada lami.
Explaining to Kaya 959 her decision to study social work, Nomfundo says she’s a “people’s person.”
She adds” “Even with the music I make, I make music for the people. I’m more concerned about people’s well-being and being part of making society a better place.”
It was during her studies that she discovered her passion for music. “I think I was doing my second year, I’d sing whenever we had small events at res and everyone was like why don’t I record a song? Then I started associating myself with a lot of creatives on campus,” she shares.
“That’s how I started writing songs and wanted to see where it could take me. Along the way, I just caught feelings for music and it just stole my heart.”
The pandemic and everything that’s been happening in the country inspired her hit-record Soft Life.
“I wrote soft life from a social work perspective because I was thinking there’s a lot going on in our society and there’s a lot we are all trying to do for a better life. It’s me doing that manifestationfoor for everyone hustling.”
Although she was not born during the Soweto uprising 46 years ago, Nomfundo has heard stories from her mom and uncles about the challenges the youth faced then.
She shares: “My mom and her siblings aren’t that far apart in terms of age. So, my uncles told me that were people in the community who represented certain political parties. And for them as a youth, they were forced to be part of a certain political party, whether they liked it or not. They had to attend some meetings after school.
“My mom says that sometimes they had run to camps because of people who come and attack the,” she said.
