South African are on a daily basis coming to grips with the crime in the country.
It should come as no surprise that South Africa’s crime and violence levels remain alarmingly high.
What’s astonishing is that, given how we’ve dealt with our violent past, poverty and inequality continue to rise, and we’ve failed as a country to establish confidence in and respect for the rule of law, there isn’t even more crime and violence.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Anna Moyo (Executive Director at the Centre on the Study of Violence and Reconciliation) who shed light on why South Africa has such high rates of violent crime.

Earlier this week Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela gave the fourth quarter crime statistics for the 2021/22 financial year before the provincial legislature.
According to the SAPS, 6,083 individuals were murdered in the third quarter (up 22% from the previous quarter) — the equivalent of 68 people each day – the greatest number in the last five years.
The number of attempted murders has increased by 25%, with the SAPS tracking 5,717 occurrences.
