There have been 1,403 individuals killed in the fiscal year 2021/22, and the Gauteng province contributed 27.6% of all murder cases to the national total.
Lt-Gen Elias Mawela, the Gauteng police commissioner, presented this before the legislature’s portfolio committee on community safety on Tuesday.
Residents in Gauteng, according to Mawela, are concerned and disappointed by the province’s crime situation.
He was announcing the provincial crime statistics for the fiscal year 2021/22. Mawela pointed out that the figures contrasted level 3 lockdown in 2021 to level 1 lockdown in 2022.
“During the period under review, 243 more people were killed in Gauteng, which reflects an increase by 18.3%. This is the highest increase in the last five years.
“Gauteng is the second province with the highest number of cases of murder during the period under review, and this is mainly due to the size of the population,” said Mawela.
