Every food item is an acquired taste really, because individual taste preferences differ. We all have something we don’t like eating and often we’re convinced that people only pretend to like these foods.
Just because certain foods are popular or trendy ingredients, doesn’t mean that these items are necessarily well liked.
For whatever reason, be it the texture, smell, taste or look, some foods may not appeal to everyone.
Picky-eaters aside, we’re convinced that these food items are secretly hated but because everyone is raving about it, you give it a go.
What’s more is that some of these food items have increased in price because of their rank in popularity. Avocados, are a good example of this.
These fruits used to be readily available in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo, with many growers often giving the fruit away. However, as it’s now known as a superfood and used as a key ingredient in healthy weight loss, the price has shot up.
It’s also a rare commodity these days, and as the climate changes, availability pushes the cost of avos up exponentially.
List of foods we’re convinced people pretend to like:
- Oysters – they have the texture of snot, is served cold and taste like sea water
- Avocados – some people love them, others hate them
- Snails – they have a weird texture, almost like chewing slimy giblets
- Cauliflower rice – Actually anything made from cauliflower is bleh. Health nuts make “buffalo wings” and pizza with the veggie too
- Caviar – it smells fishy but it’s seen as an overrated food item that is expensive
- Kale – Bitter, tough spinach is how some Feel Good listeners describe kale
- Plant-based foods – Many listeners say the plant-based foods have no taste
