President Cyril Ramphosa has broken his silence over allegations of theft levelled against him by Arthur Fraser last week.
Speaking at the ANC’s Provincial Conference in Limpopo, the president said that he has never stolen money from anyone, as his integrity as a leader will never allow him to do so.
This comes after the former State Security Agency head laid criminal charges against Ramaphosa, saying he has proof the not only did the president know about the theft but that he concealed the crime as well.
Amongst the charges levelled against the president, are kidnapping, defeating the ends of justice and bribery.
Ramaphosa has been accused of the theft of an estimated $4 million (R62 million), which was allegedly held on his Limpopo farm.
Arthur Fraser alleges that the burglary took place on 09 February 2020.
He goes onto to accuse the president of paying the culprits of the theft for their silence.
Over the weekend, the president explained that he has a lucrative game and cattle business at his Limpopo farm, where money is exchanged either in cash or wireless transfers.
“The amount that is brandished in the media is far less, some are casting aspersions about me and the money. I want to assure you, that all this was money from the proceeds of the sales of animals. I have never stolen money from anyone, be it from our taxpayers, from anyone, I have never done so. My integrity as a leader will never allow me to do so.”
Meanwhile, the Head of SAPS protection unit, Major-General Wally Rhoode did not report the crime to the police.
According to reports, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said he was not in a position to explain or discuss why Rhoode failed to report the crime.
Now, the DA has called for the South African Reserve Bank and SARS to probe the matter further and investigate whether the $4 million was declared.
